Is the Vatican Slouching toward Wickedness? 

The situation in Vatican City continues to deteriorate, as news abounds of alliances not quite in harmony with Church teaching.
Most recently we learned that “Chile’s president Michelle Bachelet, who sponsored a bid to allow legal abortion, will be one of the speakers at a November conference organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.” At the same time, we are learning more about the newly appointed members of the Pontifical Academy for Life. One of them is a defender of remarried Catholic divorcees living in adultery. Her name is Professor Anne-Marie Pelletier, a biblical theologian who also defends homosexual marriages. Pope Francis honored Pelletier by asking her write the Good Friday meditations even though she is a known public dissenter from Catholic teaching.
Sadly, Pelletier is not the only problematic appointee. New appointee Professor Nigel Biggar has said publicly that he supports abortion up to 18 weeks. And Vatican reporter Edward Pentin has mentioned several additional appointees to the Pontifical Academy for Life who dissent from the encyclical Humanae Vitae. At least one of them supports contraceptive use in some cases for Catholics.
These facts have led to, at least in my opinion, emulations of such confusing activity right here in the United States, with just one example recently happening in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Congresswoman Judy Chu, who has a 100 percent pro-abortion voting record and endorsements from both Planned Parenthood and NARAL, recently spoke at an event located at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Plaza. Though the event was not sponsored by the Church, its allowance of such a speaker on Church grounds confuses people and seems to give tacit approval. Several Catholic pro-life organizations protested, but to no avail. And as far as we could discern, Archbishop Jose Gomez had no response. Naturally Catholics are concerned and confused.
When official Vatican entities become platforms for debate and discussion of differences rather than defenders of fundamental moral teachings of the Church, we should not be surprised that things can go sideways in any diocese or Catholic university—or anywhere. It underscores the point Archbishop Charles Chaput made when he said, after a recent Synod of Bishops, that “Confusion is of the devil.”
And while the faithful have to cope with this scenario, we surely do not have to remain quiet about it. All these matters are in God’s hands, but we can take action in our own little corners of the world.
When interacting with our family and friends, many of whom are disturbed by these ebbs and flows in the Church, we can shine light in the darkness by praying. Remember the words spoken by Christ to His disciples: “For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.”
Furthermore, we are also called to be watchmen, like those the prophet Ezekiel mentioned in chapter 33. This means we must reassure our brothers and sisters that we find our refuge in Christ during these troubling times.
As my dear friend Christine Vollmer recently stated:
We are headed for very rough waters and we must not lose heart. Our Lord is alive and we must be faithful to Him and His teaching during this time of trial. Young priests and laity, and the many faithful movements, must hold firmly to the Truth, united in prayer and action until this storm is calmed. Jesus, I trust in You!
Trusting in Christ, we can speak the truth with love and charity, and we can make sure our children are educated in the ways of the Lord according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the great teaching of heroic popes like St. John Paul II. We can become individual lighthouses where others can come for reassurance that nothing is lost except that which we choose to surrender.
And surrender is not in our vocabulary.
At a time like this, we must remember the words of Pope Benedict XVI: “To defend the truth, to articulate it with humility and conviction, and to bear witness to it in life are therefore exacting and indispensable forms of charity.”
Perhaps the Vatican is slouching toward wickedness, but we are dashing toward Christ and clinging to His truth as we share it with our family and friends. We will not allow this confusion to reign.

‘Official persecution’ of faithful Catholics under Bergoglio dictatorship has begun: scholar

CHILE, September 18, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- An “official persecution of faithful Catholics has now begun under the Francis pontificate, wrote a Catholic scholar in a recently published article. 

“The official punishment of a Catholic thinker for the sole crime of defending an orthodox doctrine,” wrote Professor Claudio Pierantoni, signifies the “beginning of the official persecution of orthodoxy within the Church.”
Pierantoni is a scholar of patristics and professor of medieval philosophy at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. 
He wrote in defense of Dr. Josef Seifert, who earlier this month was removed from a Catholic university in Spain by Archbishop Javier Martínez Fernández after raising some questions about the Pope’s 2016 Exhortation Amoris Laetitia
The article was published Sept. 9 in the German magazine of philosophy and theology Aemaet.
Pierantoni said Seifert was removed from the university after highlighting a single sentence in the Pope’s Exhortation that, explained Pierantoni, Seifert saw as a “potential source of the destruction of the whole moral teaching of the Church and even of all natural Law.”
Seifert had argued in his article that if Pope Francis believes that adultery — to quote the exhortation — “is what God himself is asking” of couples in “irregular” situations, then there is nothing stopping any other intrinsically evil act, such as contraception and homosexuality, from eventually being justified.
It was because of this one statement that Seifert wondered if the Exhortation was not a ticking “theological atomic bomb” that had the capacity to destroy all Catholic moral teaching. 

In his removal of Seifert, Archbishop Martínez stated that the article “damages the communion of the Church, confuses the faith of the faithful, and sows distrust in the successor of Peter, which, in the end, does not serve the truth of faith, but, rather, the interests of the world.”

Vatican expert Sandro Magister commented that the removal of Seifert from his teaching post might go down in history as “perhaps the most dramatic legacy of Amoris Laetitia.”
Pierantoni criticized the Archbishop for his statement which he said “displays a truly surprising naiveté…of the present situation of the Church.”
“First of all, in order to affirm that someone is 'damaging the communion of the Church' in some matter, one must previously assume that some kind of communion, regarding the subject we are discussing, actually exists in the Church,” he said. 
“Now, what bishop, what priest, what educated and informed person in the Catholic Church today is unaware that there exists no subject at present more disputed and submerged in such horrifying confusion as this one?” he added.
Pierantoni said that while confusion within the Church already existed prior to the release of the Exhortation, with its publication “relativistic currents of thought and ‘situation ethics,’ which the previous three Popes had tried hard to stop, have now surreptitiously entered the pages of an official papal document.”
“Things have thus reached the point that one of the most outstanding and lucid defenders of the previous Magisterium during more than three decades, personally supported and encouraged in his philosophical enterprise by St. John Paul II as one of his most precious allies in the defence of the infallible moral doctrine of the Church, Josef Seifert, is now dismissed and treated as an enemy of the communion of the same Church,” he said. 
Pierantoni also criticized the Archbishop’s claim that Seifert’s article “sows distrust toward the successor of Peter.”
“Archbishop Martínez seems to be unaware…[that] by allowing into an official document affirmations that are contradictory to essential points of the previous Magisterium, and of the millenary doctrine of the Church, Pope Francis has directly thrown upon himself the utter distrust of an immense number of faithful Catholics. The disastrous consequence is that distrust is thereby thrown, in the minds of many, upon the Papacy itself,” he said. 
“So, what is the real cause of this distrust? Can it really be Josef Seifert’s solid and consistent effort to oppose the error of situation ethics, a commitment to which he has devoted almost his entire life and that of the institution he founded, in faithful service to the Church and to the Word of God? Or must it not be due to the fact that this very error, contrary to the whole Christian tradition (a tradition so recently reaffirmed in an Encyclical as solemn and important as [Pope St. John Paul II’s] Veritatis Splendor) has now been allowed to creep into a papal document?” he added.
Following the lead of Cardinal Raymond Burke, Pierantoni argued that Amoris Laetitia (AL) does not require assent from Catholics because it “can in no way be considered true Magisterium.”
Pope Francis, he said, states clearly in the opening of his Exhortation that there are — to quote the Exhortation — “various ways of interpreting some aspects” of the teaching and “drawing certain consequences from it” (AL 3).
“Now, this is of course very different from anything that could be considered a ‘magisterial teaching’: not only does a statement like this preclude any attempt to considering AL’s doctrine an infallible teaching, but it also precludes considering it even as authentic magisterium, at least in those parts that present novelties or even contradictions to the previous Magisterium,” he said. 
Pierantoni argued that it is because the Pope knows that his Exhortation is not magisterial teaching that he has refused to correct various bishops groups around the world who have interpreted his work in contradictory ways. For instance, the bishops in Germany allow communion for adulterers based on their interpretation of the Exhortation, while the bishops across the boarder in Poland do not – based on their interpretation.
Pierantoni said that Archbishop Martínez is “officially persecuting a most orthodox Catholic thinker” on the “false” assumption that the Exhortation is magisterial teaching when the Pope’s own words suggest otherwise. 
He said Seifert’s removal was not simply “discrimination,” but an “official persecution based on a papal document.”
“It would be hard, in modern Church history, to find another example of this. We would have rather to go back to the ancient christological controversies, when entire and vital sections of the Church – sometimes including the Papacy – were captured by heresy and thus persecuted the orthodox,” he said. 
“By officially punishing a Catholic thinker for the sole crime of being orthodox, he unwittingly confirms, and throws into clear relief, the practical schism we are suffering from in the Catholic Church, because of grave errors that have managed to creep into a papal document,” he added.
Pierantoni concluded that a “faithful defender of orthodoxy” such as Seifert could not be punished as if he were a “menace to ecclesiastical communion and an enemy of the Pope” without Pope Francis himself “actively contributing to the confusion between the Magisterium and his private opinions.”
“In the light of this, it is all the more necessary and urgent that some kind of ‘formal,’ or, maybe better, filial’ correction to the Pope, finally appear. And may God grant the Holy Father an open heart to hear it,” he concluded.

Bishop Schneider Accuses: “Francis Is Tolerating Obvious Errors”

Schneider compares this to a ship in a stormy sea, in which the captain ignores the obvious dangers, while the majority of his officers wrap themselves in silence, saying: “All is just fine on the sinking ship”. The few officers, who raise their voices, are grotesquely and unjustly criticized by their colleagues.

Schneider names the four Dubia-Cardinals and the Austrian philosopher Josef Seifert who was sacked for his criticism on the controversial Amoris Laetitia.

Seifert's dismissal by Granada Archbishop Javier Martínez Fernández is according to Schneider “not only unjust, but represents ultimately an escape from truth, a refusal of an objective debate and of dialogue”.

Schneider recalls that freedom of theological speech has been proclaimed for decades in the Church, but is denied to those who raise their voices in defense of the truth. This situation reminds him of his youth in the Soviet Union.

Theologian predicts how Bergoglio’ teaching could be used to allow contraception

ROME, September 15, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- Re-interpreting the Church’s teaching against contraception in light of Pope Francis’s teaching on marriage and family “would cause massive doctrinal and pastoral damage” to the Church, a moral theologian in Rome is warning. 
Father George Woodall, who teaches moral theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome, outlined what he called “grave” concerns about a papal commission recently set up by Pope Francis that will, he says, “re-examine Humanae vitae (HV) in the light of Amoris laetitia.” The article was published on the National Catholic Register September 12. 
Pope Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae taught that “each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of human life,” calling the use of contraception (including the pill, condom, withdrawal, and other methods) “intrinsically wrong.” The encyclical celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. 
Woodall listed the “precise points of doctrine” in the encyclical that he suspects the commission will re-examine. These include: 
  • “The principle of the inseparability of the unitive and procreative meanings of the conjugal act (HV, n. 12), stated by Paul VI to be the basis for the condemnation of contraception (HV, n. 14).”
  • “The teaching that each and every conjugal act must remain open to procreation (HV, n. 11).”
  • “The condemnation of contraception as intrinsically morally disordered and hence incapable of being justified even for a good intention in pressing circumstances on the basis either that it might be the lesser evil or that it might partake of the goodness of those conjugal acts before and/ or after, during the whole of the married life, which had been or would be open to procreation, the reason being that what is intrinsically immoral may never be done even for a good intention (HV, n. 14).”
  • “The fact that this teaching, as the constant teaching of the Magisterium on this matter, is unchanged and unchangeable because the Magisterium has no power to decide what should be true, but only to proclaim what is true (HV, nn. 6, 18).”
Woodall predicted that if the commission were to use the moral principles and language found in Pope Francis 2016 Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, it would recommend that Humanae vitae “should be rejected or, more likely, should not be interpreted legalistically.”
The commission would likely say, he said, that the encyclical should not be “imposed as burdens on couples unable to bear them by those wishing to cast stones at people in difficulties, but should be presented to them as mere 'ideals', which married couples should seek to fulfill, but which they might not be able always to fulfill in pressing circumstances and which, for a good intention — and perhaps through discernment, assisted by a pastor in the light of their unique circumstances — they might violate, set aside, or interpret creatively,” he said. 
Just as the “pastoral approach” in Amoris Laetitia was used to suggest that the 6th commandment against adultery does not apply to some couples in “irregular” situations, so too in this case, said Woodall, a similar approach would be used to suggest that Humanae vitae does not “really apply to some couples because, in their circumstances they could not be expected to abide by them.”
Woodall said that if such an outcome from the commission were to be “incorporated in a formal magisterial teaching,” a “new pastoral crisis” would be unleashed.
“Such an outcome of the commission, were it to be endorsed and enacted in formal magisterial teaching…would cause massive doctrinal and pastoral damage because the Pope would be contradicting previous popes and “centuries-old tradition of Catholic moral doctrine of moral theology,” he said. 
“Were any decision, as a result of the commission, to call [the Church’s teaching against contraceptive use] into question expressly or implicitly, in my view, it would do untold damage to the Church's magisterium, to respect for that Magisterium by Catholics and by others, to the capacity of the magisterium to teach effectively, to the Church's moral doctrine in general, and to the mission of the Church to combat the moral relativism that is the plague of the contemporary world,” he said. 
Woodall said that the Magisterium “cannot invent moral truth” but is “bound by, the gospel of Christ, revelation, dogmatically defined truths and constantly taught doctrines which have been proposed definitively or as exception-less for the universal Church.”
Woodall’s concerns echo those of Catholic philosopher Dr. Josef Seifert. In an article published last month, Seifert argued that if Pope Francis is right in Amoris Laetitia that committing the intrinsically evil act of adultery is  — to quote the exhortation — “what God himself is asking” of couples in “irregular” situations, then there is nothing stopping any other intrinsically evil act, such as contraception, from being justified.
Woodall’s concerns are also shared by Cardinal Raymond Burke, who told The Wanderer last month that no matter what the Papal commission determines, the teaching found in Humanae Vitae cannot be changed. 
“It is the infallible teaching of the Church that contraception is intrinsically disordered, that to separate the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital act is always and everywhere wrong,” he said at that time. 
“If this teaching is not upheld, not only is there a violation of the conjugal act in its essence, but there would then be an opening for all kinds of immoral activity involving our sexual faculties while people would justify sinful genital acts,” he added.

All this system of maternal vessels, embryonic, syncytiotrophoblast ... will give rise to the mature organ called chorion that fuses with the uterine wall to give rise to the placenta. 

 Therefore there is no exchange of blood between the mother and the embryo, the chorion will be the surface of exchange, both gases and nutrients and that is one of the reasons why during the fetal stage the red blood cells embryos possess a different type of subunit in hemoglobin , the gamma subunit, with much more affinity for oxygen, thus facilitating the uptake of oxygen that comes through the mother's blood.  At the same time this system will allow the fetus to get rid of certain waste substances, mostly carbon dioxide. 

 As you have seen, this complex system of mother and child exchange is supported by embryonic tissues as well as maternal tissues, and their formation depends on orders that mutually exist between the two systems to constitute the definitive architecture.

  • The Placenta has a barrier function:

 The placental barrier is composed of structures that separate maternal and fetal blood and their composition varies throughout the course of pregnancy. 
 The placental barrier can not be traversed by large molecules, therefore, by blood cells, but it can be crossed by some types of antibodies (IgG), so that the fetus is immunized against those antigens for which it receives antibodies of the mother. 

 Many microorganisms are not able to traverse the placenta, so the fetus is protected during a time when your immune system is not ripe.  However, most viruses are able to traverse or break this barrier.  The bacterium that transmits syphilis, Treponema pallidum, can cross the placental barrier from the fifth month, causing a miscarriage or congenital diseases. 

 Many drugs can cross the placental barrier, reaching the fetus (this is the reason why many drugs are contraindicated during pregnancy).

 In fact, these scientific evidences overturn the abortionist arguments that erroneously consider the fetus as part of the mother's body.

Saint Augustine: 

The temple then signifies the body derived from Adam; which body our Lord did not take in its sinful state, but renewed it, in that after the Jews had destroyed it, He raised it again the third day. The Jews however, being carnal, understood carnally; He spoke spiritually. He tells us, by the Evangelist, what temple He means; But He spoke of the temple of His Body.  

Saint Augustin, de Haer: [The error of the heretics about Christ is limited to three areas: They err either about his divinity, or his humanity, or the two together.]  

Pseudo-Chrys.: How Booz took to wife a Moabitess whose name was Ruth, I thought it needless to tell, seeing the Scripture concerning them is open to all. We need but say thus much, that Ruth married Booz for the reward of her faith, for that she had cast off the gods of her forefathers, and had chosen the living God. And Booz received her to wife for reward of his faith, that from such sanctified wedlock might be descended a kingly race. 

 Luke 1:39-45: 
Now she rightly calls the Lord the fruit of the virgin’s womb, because He proceeded not from man, but from Mary alone. For they who are sown by their fathers are the fruits of their fathers.


This fruit alone then is blessed, because it is; produced without man, and without sin.


But because there have been other holy women who yet have borne sons stained with sin, she adds, And blessed is the fruit of your womb. Or another interpretation is, having said, Blessed are you among women, she then, as if some one inquired the cause, answers, And blessed is the fruit of your womb: as it is said, Blessed be he that comes in the name of the Lord. But since it seems shocking or unworthy to some men that God should inhabit a body, is the Sun, I would ask, the heat whereof is felt by each body that receives its rays, at all sullied as to its natural purity? Much more then does the Sun of Righteousness, in taking upon Himself a most pure body from the Virgin’s womb, escape not only defilement, but even show forth His own mother in greater holiness. 

By the term overshadowing, both natures of the Incarnate God are signified. For shadow is formed by light and matter. But the Lord by His Divine nature is light. Because then immaterial light was to be embodied in the Virgin’s womb, it is well said to her, The power of the Highest shall overshadow you, that is, the human body in you shall receive an immaterial light of divinity. For this is said to Mary for the heavenly refreshing of her soul. 

Saint Augustine: 
For He alone and singly is the Lamb without spot, without sin; not because His spots are wiped off; but because He never had a spot. He alone is the Lamb of God, for by His blood alone can men be redeemed. This is the Lamb whom the wolves fear; even the slain Lamb, by whom the lion was slain.  

Saint Maximus the Confessor:

God became perfect man, taking on everything that belongs to human nature except sin, and indeed sin is not part of human nature created by God:
He [the Word] becomes an infant […]. He reveals as much of Himself as He knows the recipient can accept; He does not diminish the manifestation of His own greatness out of lack of generosity but estimates the receptive capacity of those who desire to see Him. In this way the divine Logos is eternally made manifest m different modes of participation, and yet remains eternally invisible to all in virtue of the surpassing nature of His hidden activity. That is why the apostle, when wisely considering the power of this hidden activity, says, ‘Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and throughout the ages’ (Heb 13:8); for he sees the hidden activity as something which is always new and never becomes outmoded through being embraced by the intellect. […] Christ our God is born and becomes man by adding to Himself flesh endowed with an intellective soul. He who from non-being brings created things into being is Himself born supranaturally of a Virgin who does not thereby lose her virginity. For just as He Himself became man without changing His nature or altering His power, so He makes her who bore Him a Mother while keeping her a Virgin. In this way He reveals one miracle through another miracle, at the same time concealing the one with the other. This is because in Himself, according to His essence. God always remains a mystery. He expresses His natural hiddenness in such a way that He makes it the more hidden through the revelation. Similarly, in the case of the Virgin who bore Him, He made her a Mother in such a way that by conceiving Him the bonds of her virginity became even more in- dissoluble. […] As man I deliberately transgressed the divine commandment, when the devil, enticing me with the hope of divinity (cf. Gen. 3:5), dragged me down from my natural stability into the realm of sensual pleasure; and he was proud to have thus brought death into existence, for he delights in the corruption of human nature. Because of this, God became perfect man, taking on everything that belongs to human nature except sin (cf. Heb. 4:15); and indeed sin is not part of human nature. In this way, by enticing the insatiable serpent with the bait of the flesh, He provoked him to open his mouth and swallow it. This flesh proved poison to him, destroying him utterly by the power of the Divinity within it; but to human nature it proved a remedy restoring it to its original grace by that same power of the Divinity within it. For just as the devil poured out his venom of sin on the tree of knowledge and corrupted human nature once it had tasted it, so when he wished to devour the flesh of the Master he was himself destroyed by the power of the Divinity within it. […] How did He who is wholly God by nature become wholly man by nature, not renouncing either nature in any way at all, neither the divine, through which He is God, nor ours, through which He became man? Faith alone can embrace these mysteries, for it is faith that makes real for us things beyond intellect and reason (cf. Heb. 11:1). Because Adam disobeyed, human nature has come to be generated through sensual pleasure; banishing such pleasure from human nature, the Lord had nothing to do with engendering by means of seed. Because the woman transgressed the commandment, the generation of human nature begins in pain (cf. Gen. 3:16); expelling this from human nature through His birth, the Lord did not allow her who bore Him to lose her virginity. He did this in order to expel from human nature both pleasure deliberately sought and the resulting unsought pain, becoming the destroyer of those things which He did not create. Through this He also mystically taught us to embark of our own accord on another way of life, one perhaps begun in pain and labor but nevertheless ending in divine pleasure and everlasting gladness. That is why He who made man became a man and was born as a man, so that He might save man and, by healing our passions through His passion, might Himself supra-naturally destroy the passions that were destroying us, in His compassion renewing us in the spirit through His privations in the flesh. Augustine de Peccatorum Meritis, ii, 30: For blood that was without sin being shed, the bond of all men's sins was done away, by which men were before held captive by the Devil. 

According to this dogmatic definition, it has been revealed by God that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception.
